Our next meeting will be on Thursday, January 20 from 5p.m. – 7p.m. in BA B026

Hi everyone,

The game club will be meeting this week on Thursday, January 20 from 5p.m. – 7p.m. in BA B026, which is the same time and place as last week’s meeting.

This week we’ll be doing something a little different compared our usual meetings. We will be designing and creating a card game. The game will start out with an objective and a simple set of rules, which will eventually evolve and be expanded upon by the group as we playtest our card game. The goal here is to have you all participate in an activity that some developers use to prototype their games in order to establish a fun and balanced game design. Credit goes to game club member Sean for suggesting this idea.

It should be a fun meeting, and we hope to see many, if not all, of you there.

Also, our meeting this Thursday will be the LAST opportunity for anyone who hasn’t already signed up and submitted their entry fee for GMD 2011 to do so. After this week’s meeting, which is on Thursday, January 20 from 5p.m. – 7p.m. in BA B026, if you have not already submitted your form and entry fee for GMD 2011, then you will NOT be allowed to submit your game for this year’s GMD. So make sure that you get in on the fun and the prizes of GMD 2011 by getting your form and money in by then.

Our first game club meeting of the new year will be on Thursday, January 13 from 5p.m. – 7p.m. in BA B026

Hey everyone,

Our first game club meeting of the new year will be on Thursday, January 13 from 5p.m. – 7p.m. in BA B026.

We will be talking about input devices and user interfaces used in gaming, and we will also be answering any questions you may have about this year’s GMD (whether it be about coding, rules etc.).

Please note that this is the last week anyone will be able to hand in the forms and money for this year’s Game-Making Deathmatch (GMD)! If you are interested in joining this year and have not handed in the forms or the money, you must do so before the end of this Thursday’s meeting.
The form can be found at: http://gmd.utgddc.com/2011/
It is ten dollars to Join GMD.

See you then.

Happy Holidays. No game club meeting this week.

Hi everyone,

Classes have finished for this semester, so there will be no game club meeting this week (and for the rest of this year). We’ll get back into our regularly scheduled meetings next year at the start of the winter semester. Until then, good luck with your GMD games (post to the forums at forum.utgddc.com if you need help), good luck with exams, and we’ll see you all in the new year!

Also, I just wanted to remind anyone who hasn’t signed up yet for GMD 2011 that you can still do so until Thursday, December 16. The registration form can be found at http://gmd.utgddc.com/2011/files/GMD2k11rules1.pdf, and you can get in touch with Shane, the GMD Coordinator, at gmd@utgddc.com to arrange a time to meet up with him so that you or your team can pay the $10 registration fee.

Happy holidays.

Vortex Game Conference and Competition submissions due by Jan 3

Now in its 6th year, the Vortex Game Conference and Competition is a huge event where emerging video game developers and entrepreneurs can network with industry pros to get the tools and contacts they need to succeed in the video game industry. Arguably, the main features of Vortex are its Boot Camp sessions and its video game concept and prototype competition.

The Boot Camp sessions offer individuals the opportunity to receive coaching and guidance from prominent and experienced video game industry leaders who will help advise attendees on turning their video game concepts and prototypes into commercial successes. The competition portion of Vortex allows aspiring game developers to submit their game’s concept or prototype to be judged by a panel of top-level industry professionals who will also provide direct guidance and coaching.

New dates for Vortex 2011 have just gone up on their website, and they are as follows:

Jan 19, 2011- Boot Camp – The Glass Factory
Feb 2, 2011- Round 1 Competition – Bell Lightbox – Toronto
Feb 24, 2011- Round 2 Competition – The Glass Factory
March 30, 2011- Finals – Bell Lightbox – Toronto

Considering the fact that many of you are making games for GMD 2011, this might be the ideal event where you can submit your prototype game for a chance to get professional feedback on it and have it developed to be sold commercially. With all of the big-named speakers and guests who are scheduled to be in attendance, including major executives from Disney Interactive and BioWare, Vortex is something to seriously consider.

The last day to enter a game concept or prototype submission for the Vortex competition is January 3. Visit the Vortex website to learn more about the speakers, workshops, and competition featured at this event. If you are signing up to attend and/or compete, consider using the early bird promo code that is mentioned here on the Vortex website.

Our next “informal” meeting will be outside of BA 2179 on Thursday, December 2 from 5pm -7pm‏

Hi everybody,

Unfortunately, due to a double booking, we don’t have an official room for this week’s game club meeting. However, we will instead be having an “informal” meeting outside of BA 2179 on Thursday, December 2 from 5pm -7pm in order to help people get started on their GMD games by
offering help with programming and other aspects of their game’s development.

Also, due to an increased workload on everyone with exams and such, we want to find out who will be able to make it out to next week’s game club meeting on Thursday, December 9 from 5pm – 7pm. Please hit the “reply” button and let us know if you’d be able to come out to next
week’s meeting. If there are enough people interested, then we will be having a game club meeting next week.

Hopefully, we’ll see you there.

Our next game club meeting will be on Thursday, November 25 from 5p.m. – 7p.m. in BA 1200.

Hey everyone,

Our next game club meeting will be on Thursday, November 25 from 5p.m. – 7p.m. in BA 1200. It’s during the same time as last week’s meeting, but in different room.

The theme for this year’s Game-Making Deathmatch (GMD 2011) will finally be announced at this special meeting, and registration for the competition will officially open and remain open for 2 weeks afterwards.

Additionally, we will be sharing and discussing some tools and techniques that you can use to help keep your game-making process fun, organized, and stress-free.

See you then.

Our next game club meeting will be on Thursday, November 18 from 5p.m. – 7p.m. in BA 2179

Hi everyone,

Our next game club meeting will be on Thursday, November 18 from 5p.m. – 7p.m. in BA 2179, which is the same time and room as last week’s meeting.

This week, Barry will be giving a talk about the games that he has created over past few years and how he made them. Barry is a former 1st place winner of GMD and has also won some other game-making competitions. You should definitely check out and play Barry’s amazing catalogue of games, which are posted up on the forums at http://forum.utgddc.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=1323, in order to get a good idea of the type of creativity, originality, and technical skill that goes into his work. This talk should also be beneficial as a means to further prepare you for our upcoming GMD, which will begin near the end of this month.

It should be a fun meeting, and we hope to see you there.

P.S. If you’re interested in helping out with the browser-based “Sim City” game that we discussed during last week’s meeting, then please send an email to Frankie at president@utgddc.com with your contact info.

Our next game club meeting will be on Thursday, November 11 from 5p.m. – 7p.m. in BA 2179

Hello everyone,

Just reminding all of you that our next game club meeting will be on Thursday, November 11 from 5p.m. – 7p.m. in BA 2179, which is at the same time and room as last week’s meeting.

This week, Shane will be talking about the upcoming Game Making Deathmatch (GMD) competition that the utGDDC hosts every year, and he will be giving the details about registration, elegibility, contest timelines, and other aspects of GMD. The theme for this year’s GMD will be announced near the end of this month, and the competition will begin immeadiately afterward. So, this week’s meeting is the one to go to for everything about GMD, the utGDDC’s biggest event.

We’ll see you there.

IGDA panel discussion entitled Project Management: Maximizing Capacity on November 4 at 7:30p.m.

IMPORTANT EDIT: The IGDA panel discussion begins at 7:30p.m., NOT 8:30p.m. as I had originally posted by accident.

A good catch from our Vice President, Gabriel. The IGDA will be having a panel discussion this week on a topic entitled Project Management: Maximizing Capacity – scheduling, organization and implementation strategy. This discussion will take place on Thursday, November 4 starting at 7:30p.m. (after our game club meeting) at Metro Hall, located at 55 John St. in Toronto, in room 308. If you’ve ever wanted to learn more about how to effectively manage a game development team, then this would be the discussion for you to attend.

There appears to be a great set of panellists lined up for the evening including three video game industry professionals, Alex Parizeau (Producer on Splinter Cell Conviction at Ubisoft), Lesley Milner (Producer on Bioshock 2 at Digital Extremes), and Rhys Yorke (Producer on The Secret World at Funcom). The panel will be moderated by former utGDDC member and founder (yes, you read that correctly) Andrei Petrov.

It should prove to be a very informative evening for those of you who are interested in attending this panel discussion, and it’s likely that a few of us will head on down to the IGDA event after the game club meeting this Thursday. Naturally, anyone is welcome and encouraged to come along if they wish to. There is also an IGDA social event after the discussion panel.
